Garmin GPS – Global Positioning System
Global Positioning System is a navigation system based on satellites. GPS was originally named as NAVSTAR GPS and is owned by the government of the United States and it is the US Space Force that operates it.
It comprises of a minimum of 24 satellites. The best part about Global Positioning System is that it can function anywhere in all geographical locations round the clock without incurring any setup cost or subscription fee.
There are presently 31 satellites that comprise the GPS. They are circling the earth at a height of 12,000 miles above the ground. Their speed is around 7,000 miles an hour. The satellites are always on the move and are able to complete 2 orbits is a time span of less than 24 hours. There are little rocket boosters that help each satellite in moving on the right path.
The working of Garmin GPS
The earth is circled by GPS satellites twice a day. Every satellite sends signals and parameters that let GPS devices find out the accurate location of the satellite. This information is used by GPS receivers to calculate the exact location of the user. It is the receiver that electronically displays the position of the user to find a route to go back home, a new adventure spot or the distance the user has been running for.
A GPS receiver has to get signals from 4 or more satellites in order to get the user’s 3D position. A GPS receiver tracks 8 or more satellites but that is based on what the time of the day it is and where you are geographically located. There are some GPS devices that can help you navigate by simply being worn as a wrist watch!
How good is the precision of Garmin GPS?
The GPS receivers in the current times are very accurate. Garmin GPS receivers in particular are really fast in locking onto satellites once they are switched on. However, there can be a negative effect on the accuracy of the receivers because of atmospheric factors. The accuracy of Garmin GPS receivers is more or less within 10 meters. With WAAS (Wide Area Augmentation System), some Garmin GPS receivers have a better accuracy (more or less 3 meters). There is no additional cost for this as well.
You can get even better accuracy with Differential GPS (DGPS). It corrects GPS distances within 1 to 3 meters on an average. The most common DGPS correction service is operated by the U.S. Coast Guard. They get GPS signals, correct them and transmit them with beacon transmitters. To be able to receive a corrected signal, you as a user must have a differential beacon receiver and a beacon antenna along with your GPS device.
Systems similar to Garmin GPS
The world has other systems that are similar to the US-owned GPS. There is a system called GLONASS that was built by Russia. China’s system named BeiDou is under processing and so is European Space Agency’s Galileo.
Most Garmin GPS receivers are tracking GPS as well as GLONASS. There are also those that are tracking BeiDou. The more satellites your device tracks, the better will be the accuracy of your result. With the latest Garmin products, you can track up to 20 satellites!
